John Murray Forbes
John Murray Forbes, a prominent American businessman, is his name. He was born 23 February 1813 in Bordeaux and died 12 October 1898 in Boston. He was a railway magnate and president, in 1850s, of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad and Michigan Central Railroad.

Francis Blackwell Forbes
Francis Blackwell Forbes was the son of John Murray Forbes, a clergyman and a member of the Forbes family. He was the great-grandson of Rev. John Forbes and grandson of James Grant Forbes. He was also a pioneer of Chinese botany and was responsible to promote the Shanghai Country Club. He also wrote papers concerning the Burlingame Expedition. Forbes' family moved to Europe in 1880s. Forbes joined Russell & Co. Forbes also started the Shanghai Steam Navigation Company, which operated flat-bottomed steamers along the Yangtze River.
Forbes was born in New York City on the 11th of August 1839. His parents were John Murray Forbes (c1807-1885) and Anne Howell (c1849-1860). He married Isabel Clark, New York City on 8th May 1867. They had three sons: William Howell Forbes (1837-1896), Henry De Courcy Forbes (1849-1920), & Paul Revere Forbes (1860-1936). The family owned and ran a number of businesses both in New York and around the world.

Robert Bennet Forbes, a merchant in the China trade and sea captain, was born on 18 September 1804. He was a Massachusetts native, born near Boston in 1809. He received his primary education in France but returned to Boston for secondary school. He was also an active participant in the opium and shipbuilding industries. He gave his time and money to charities throughout his life.
